About Creekwood Restaurant

Creekwood Restaurant, located at 3121 Sacramento St in Berkeley, California, offers a distinctive dining experience that blends the rich traditions of Italian cuisine with the fresh, innovative spirit of Californian fare. Founded by childhood friends Greg Poulios and Mark Louie, Creekwood is the realization of a long-held dream that began years earlier while working together at Zuppa in San Francisco. Their vision was to create a contemporary locale where guests could enjoy authentic Italian dishes, such as Neapolitan-style pizzas, alongside fresh pasta, seafood, and meat dishes, all prepared with a California twist.

The restaurant occupies a building with a unique history. Originally a bike shop in disrepair, the founders purchased the property in 2012 and transformed it completely. Today, Creekwood boasts an elegant, minimalist gray faΓ§ade that subtly blends into the South Berkeley neighborhood, with no overt signage announcing its presence. The name β€œCreekwood” is inspired by a creek that runs beneath the building, adding a natural and local element to the restaurant’s identity. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, featuring a custom-built wooden interior and carefully chosen decorative touches, including nearly century-old lamps sourced from a former ammunition factory in Wisconsin. This blend of rustic charm and modern design creates a welcoming environment where diners can feel both comfortable and inspired.

One of the standout features of Creekwood is its open kitchen, where guests can watch executive chef Liam Bonner and his team craft each dish with care and precision. Chef Bonner, who brings experience from notable establishments like Zuppa and Globe, leads the kitchen in delivering a menu that balances traditional Italian flavors with the fresh, seasonal ingredients characteristic of California cuisine. The menu highlights include Neapolitan-style pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven, handmade pastas, and a variety of seafood and meat dishes that showcase the best of both culinary worlds.

Creekwood’s approach to food is rooted in the philosophy that life is short and opportunities should be embraced. This mindset is reflected not only in the founders’ journey to establish the restaurant but also in the vibrant, flavorful dishes they serve. The restaurant’s commitment to quality ingredients and thoughtful preparation ensures that every meal is a memorable experience, whether it’s a casual lunch or a special dinner.

With its prime location in South Berkeley, Creekwood has become a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike who seek a refined yet approachable dining option. The combination of Italian culinary tradition and Californian innovation, paired with a cozy and stylish setting, makes Creekwood Restaurant a standout destination for those craving authentic, contemporary Italian fare in the Bay Area. We were a group of 10 people, and owner Greg and the team took great care of us. Greg even went to the store to buy an extra umbrella! Food was all really tasty

My wife Ellie and I stumbled upon Creekwood while visiting Berkeley this evening, and it turned out to be the perfect find β€” the kind of dinner that reminds you why you love going out. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere struck us: warm wood and metal, thoughtful lighting, casual yet genuinely refined. Someone with real design sensibility had a hand in this place. The bar is great for drop-ins, the staff was wonderful throughout, and the ingredients in everything we ordered were fresh and inventive. We started with the winter salad β€” kale, pear, endive, lightly dressed β€” and it was exactly right. The mushroom pizza was delicious. Ellie had a glass of California Chardonnay and I had a Tuscan red blend; both were excellent choices for the evening. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Greg, who has connections to Sonoma wine country β€” and it was genuinely fun to swap memories and talk shop. That kind of warmth from ownership shows up in every corner of the restaurant. We'll absolutely be back. Highly recommend Creekwood to anyone looking for a neighborhood gem that punches well above its weight.

This is a lovely restaurant with a great ambiance and great service. I have a gluten allergy and I emailed ahead of time and they assured me they take measures to prevent cross-contamination and my server was knowledgeable about all the gluten-free options. I ended up playing it extra safe and just going with a beet salad with chicken (although they did have gluten-free pizza dough available) which was delicious! Our waitress was extremely detail oriented and attentive to our large party. We had a mix of adults and kids and everybody had something that they liked. I will say that two of the people in our party did not like the Cesar salad, although I didn't try it.

Important news flash: they do BRUNCH in addition to incredible dinners. I could write a whole post on how amazing and lovely this is as a date spot for dinner and how much I freaking love their salads and gluten free pizzas (possibly my favorite one in the bay), but this is about brunch. We had no idea they did brunch and when we looked at the menu for it online, it didn’t list any mains. But we went anyway and were blown away. I’m adding a pic of the actual brunch menu so you can see the real selection offered. Y’all, they have a BREAKFAST PIZZA and I promise it’s even better than you would imagine. Do you like breakfast? Do you like pizza? This is a heavenly chimera of two of life’s greatest joys. πŸ‘‘πŸ”₯ Don’t sleep on the brunch! But also the perfect date spot. Get yourself a restaurant that can do both, and support local. The owner was there during our visit and went out of his way to create an excellent experience. Also, the patio is very dog friendly 🐢

Amaaaaazing! Such a special neighborhood gem. We got and love the PEI mussels. Perfect amount of kick and couldn't get enough of that white wine butter sauce. The Margherita pizza and roasted beet salad also are must-gets. The salad has this yummy pistachio praline topping. I could eat that alone as a snack. Service was warm and helpful, especially with the recommendations. I can't wait to be back and definitely want to try their brunch offerings as well!
